J.S.G Boggs, the most celebrated and controversial artist who used to engrave beautiful artworks over banknotes, his art is now available on NFT. The collection is a collaborative work of the artist’s estate and laCollection, a platform helping museums grow their web3 presence. Boggs’ estate planned to continue the artist’s legacy by releasing five digital art pieces representing original banknote art.
Bogg, the artist, caught attention by printing money. Boggs can be called a self-proclaimed saint of cryptocurrency. The artist needed help because of his realistic banknote drawings with satirical images. He was jailed twice.
J.S.G Boggs and his unique yet controversial artwork
J.S.G Boggs began his career as an abstract artist; however, he couldn’t succeed. In 1984 when travelling to Chicago, Boggs stopped at a café. After finishing his doughnut and coffee, he suddenly started doodling figure one on a napkin; it created an abstract copy of the original dollar. As the waitress arrived to collect money, she got awestruck and requested Boggs to give her the artistic note.
On refusing, the waitress offered him twenty dollars in exchange for that artistic dollar note. This incident shaped the artist’s newfound interest and set the stepping stone of banknote artwork.
The story amazes us with the fact that how a minor incident gave birth to a new art form. Though people widely accepted his unique works, the judiciary or government bodies prosecuted and seized the artistic banknotes several times. In 1992 Boggs stated, “they said I was a counterfeiter. They don’t understand the difference between art and crime.”
J.S.G Boggs and his beautiful art on NFT
The laCollection titled the art collection “an exhibition,” and it will be an attempt to show the world possibilities of art and currency. The NFT holders can get an exclusive chance to receive printed banknotes of Boggs and get invited to view beautiful archives of the artists. The collection creators rely on the artistic process of Boggs for releasing the drop.
Per the co-founder of laCollection, they tried recreating the elements he used in the banknote art creation process. The J.S.G. Boggs will use the revenue earned from its sale in funding to preserve Bogg’s archives.
